A big-screen classic, this romantic drama of obsession and betrayal is set in 1900’s Vienna. Considered true to its source – a story by one of the 20th century’s greatest writers, Stefan Zweig – the film was directed by Max Ophuls, a refugee from the Weimar Republic (he escaped first to France, then settled in the US). The story was adapted by blacklisted Hollywood writer Howard Koch.
