SUMMARY:Pop Culture and Social Change Retreat 2027 — Digital
DESCRIPTION:Counterpoints Arts’ 2026 Pop Culture and Social Change Retreat\n  \nDelivered in collaboration with the Power of Pop Fund — will bring together 50 change-making producers\, content creators\, cultural innovators\, activists and philanthropists at Dartington Hall\, Devon\, from 7-9th October. \n  \nAt a moment when digital platforms are concentrating power in fewer and fewer hands\, and far-right narratives are being amplified and funded across the media landscape\, this year’s retreat turned its focus to digital storytelling for social justice. \n  \nOver two and a half days\, we explored how digital cultural content can drive social change\, disrupt power structures\, and build long-term narrative power. This retreat was framed by a new piece of research\, commissioned in collaboration with the AKO Storytelling Institute at UAL\, that shows the urgency and relevance of this subject in this highly polarised time. \n  \nBackground\nSince the first Counterpoints Art’s Pop Culture & Social Change Retreat in 2018\, more creative teams are collaborating\, producing and supporting narrative change initiatives. The 2022 retreat drew inspiration from these pop culture case studies\, and the shared knowledge and experience of a fast growing network of creative practitioners and change-makers. Recent examples of successful films focusing on lived experience of migration and displacement include\, multi-award winning films such as All That’s Left of You (2025) by Cherein Dabis and A Fox Under a Pink Moon (2025)\, directed by Mehrdad Oskouei and Soraya Akhlaghi\, highlighting the power of film to drive social change. Or Netflix’s Peabody Winner Mo and Apple TV’s Pachinko highlighting the experiences of an undocumented migrant from Palestine and South Korea (respectively). The 2024 retreat brought together an extraordinary community of practitioners to develop cultural interventions at the nexus of climate and migrant justice — forging connections\, building collective imagination\, and planting the seeds for what this network will do next. \n  \nSetting\nThe programme included inspiring work by a range of content creators\, platforms and cultural producers with short inspirations\, provocations and workshops. We held a programme of events featuring workshops\, talks\, film and performance\, and space for informal networking including shared meals featuring locally sourced food. The retreat was supported by Unbound Philanthropy\, and The Power of Pop Fund with all of the activities set in the beautiful Grade-II listed Dartington Hall\, near Totnes\, Devon. \n  \nRead more about our PopChange initiative here.

SUMMARY:One Song at Fabrica
DESCRIPTION:One Song is an audio-visual installation and community archive by artist Kadir Karababa. The exhibition explores how music carries memory\, identity and a sense of home across borders.\nBegun in 2022\, this touring project comes to Fabrica in Brighton\, bringing together songs and stories contributed by women with personal experience of migration or seeking sanctuary. Built through participation and shared experience\, this iteration of the exhibition was developed with members of the Brighton community. \nEach participant is invited to share a song that transports them to the place they first called home. These songs form the heart of the installation\, bringing together individual memories to create a collective portrait of migration\, belonging and home. \nThe project is inspired by the artist’s own family history of migration from South East Turkey to London\, and by an interest in how songs travel across borders while remaining rooted in the places where they were first sung. \nThe songs featured in this exhibition are deeply personal\, connected to family\, language and everyday life\, and carried across time and distance. For many contributors\, singing becomes a way of reconnecting with places\, people and experiences that are no longer physically present. \nTogether\, these voices create a shared space for listening and reflection. While each story remains unique\, common themes of movement\, belonging\, loss and connection emerge through the music. \nPerformed in their original languages and accompanied by English subtitles\, the songs speak beyond translation. Through voice\, melody and emotion\, visitors are invited to connect with the lived experiences at the heart of the exhibition\, engaging not only with the lyrics but with the universal feelings carried within the music. \nBy bringing these stories together\, One Song creates space for voices that are often unheard\, offering a powerful way of understanding migration through memory\, music and lived experience. \nOne Song was originally commissioned by Counterpoints Arts. This iteration has been supported by Arts Council England and Counterpoints Arts. To view the archive of songs that make up One Song and to read more about work visit onesong.co.uk \nFree entry\, no booking required \nOpening Times:\nTuesdays 1 – 5pm\nWednesday – Sunday 12 – 6pm\n(closed Mondays) \nAbout The Artist \nKadir Karababa is a British-Turkish artist whose practice explores identity\, memory and belonging through personal and collective experience. Working across painting\, sculpture\, installation and socially engaged practice\, his work draws on his lived experience as a working-class\, queer artist navigating multiple identities. \nOne Song website
