SUMMARY:Encounters
DESCRIPTION:ENCOUNTERS is a site-specific installation developed by Kingston School of Art’s MArch Architecture students in collaboration with MA Photography students\, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration rooted in circular economy principles and reuse strategies. Featuring photographic and moving image works\, the exhibition responds to the themes of migration\, refuge\, and displacement. \nThe exhibition is running from 16 to 22 June\, 11am – 4pm each day\, at Yorkton Workshops. \nAlongside the exhibition\, a panel discussion will explore cultural production and research practices related to migration\, displacement\, and social justice. These conversations aim to deepen engagement with the themes at the heart of the project. \nThe panel discussion will be led by Dr Maria Mencia\, an artist-researcher in media arts and digital poetics\, codirector of the research group Sound/Image/Media/ Encounters (SIME) and postgraduate coordinator at Kingston School of Art. Guest speakers will include Dr Amak Mahmoodian\, a multidisciplinary artist and educator\, Kate Watson\, visual artist\, researcher and educator\, Liz Hingley\, artist and anthropologist and Edwin Mingard\, visual artist working principally with moving image. \nThe panel will take place on Thursday 19 June 2025 from 3 to 6pm. Reserve your free place here. Spaces are limited. \nThere will also be a Private Viewing on Thursday 19 June 2025\, from 6.30-9pm. \nThis project is created in partnership with Refugee Week (the world’s largest arts & culture festival celebrating the contributions\, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary)\, Counterpoints (a leading national organisation in the field of arts\, migration and cultural change) and Yorkton Workshops (home to award-winning design studio Pearson Lloyd). \nThe Project:\nEncounters began as a live brief module for MA Photography students\, developed in partnership with Refugee Week and Counterpoints Arts. The students were invited to respond to a brief set by the Refugee Week team and independently devise projects that explore the themes of migration and displacement. For many\, this marked their first direct engagement with refugee experiences and the complexities surrounding displacement. \nTackling such a profound and challenging subject matter has proven to be both a demanding and deeply rewarding journey. It was a process of learning\, and in many cases\, of unlearning: questioning assumptions\, cultivating empathy\, and discovering new ways of seeing. This exhibition presents a diverse range of creative responses\, reflecting not only on the realities of displacement\, but also on the process of coming to understand those realities. \nThe final installation emerged from yet another meaningful Encounter – this time with 17 exceptionally talented MArch Architecture students. Volunteering their time\, they collaborated with MA Photography students to create a site-specific installation that responds to the themes of displacement and refuge. Their design is grounded in circular economy principles\, bringing a sense of lightness/ transience and a commitment to adaptability\, reuse and sustainability. \nThis exhibition is\, above all\, a reflection of all these Encounters – between disciplines\, between people\, and between perspectives. It seeks to convey the insights and growth our students have experienced as they engaged with this vital and urgent topic. \nParticipating Artists:\nAnchen Li\, Anna Jannepalli\, Tommy Pai\, Edith Robinson\, Eghbal Raoufifard\, Jaewoo Lee\, Jay Lin\, Justin Pappoe\, Meng Zhang\, Jingyao Yan\, Rui Zheng\, Shubham Kakade\, Tilan Xue\, Zixin Luo\, Tom Cai\, Yang Tonge\, with Nana Varveropoulou as MA Photography module leader. \nRify Hossain\, Chelsea Richards\, Cam Heslop\, Priyanshi Dhanrajbhai Jain\, Pete Goding\, Alice Parker\, Azsvina Ragunathan\, Eadan Filbrandt\, Babitha Ravi Kumar\, Telma Ferraris\, Rama Shetty\, Rio Jablonski\, Ian Karuhanga\, Berfin Tas\, Valerie Wan\, Shadi Rashedi\, Anisha Iqbal\, Rajan Savaliya\, with Aoife Donnelly as MArch Architecture Lead.

The performances are interwoven with poetry and hosted by curator and Lead Scratch Artist Awate. \nAll artists chosen for this Scratch Showcase are women or non-binary people\, and two special guest artists perform as part of our futuretense gig series supporting emerging artists. \nThis event is open to all audiences wanting to experience work in its initial stages of development\, and applications to present work were open to artists aged over 18 from a global majority background (or tackling the subjects of diaspora and migration)\, whether you’re a writer\, musician\, dancer\, filmmaker\, designer or anything in between. \nArtists presenting works-in-progress are Oishi Dutta\, Chakira Alin\, Shivani Sen\, Natsuko Yonezawa\, Alex Bertulis-Fernandes\, Torera Sotinwa. \nThis Scratch is hosted by Awate and Ornella Mutoni\, Filmmaker and Counterpoints’ PopChange Producer. \nIn the past we have had films inspired by Greek mythology\, stylists presenting their original textile designs\, stand up comedy\, powerful rap music\, innovative piano performances and short plays reflecting on the trans experience. \nAfter presenting at our Scratch event\, artists have gone on to embark on their first UK music tours\, had their short films presented at the BFI London Film Festival\, secured options from high-profile TV production companies\, started their own regular comedy nights and found lasting connections with other artists in the audience or presenting alongside them. \nThis Scratch Showcase is a collaboration between Awate\, Counterpoints Arts and the Southbank Centre. Book your tickets here. \nAbout artists: \nOishi Roy Dutta (b. 2000) is a multi-medium artist and art-director based between London and New Delhi. Oishi‘s work explores the complexities of human experience in an evolving technological landscape\, examining ocular politics\, ethnicity\, modern myths\, and contemporary “human artifacts.” A Fine Arts graduate from Delhi University’s College of Art (2022)\, she has worked with The Nourishment Project’s opera NIRAKAR\, luxury jeweler Sunita Shekhawat\, and  India Art Fair\, apart from various other creative projects with emerging musicians and fashion houses. Blending visual storytelling with conceptual depth\, she investigates multi-dimensional existence in an exceedingly complicated socio-political landscape. Oishi is currently pursuing an MA in Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art. \nChakira Alin (she/her) is a writer\, actor and filmmaker from the East End of London\, making work with her production company Quite the Cowboy. Chakira recently completed her latest short film\, THE PILGRIMAGE\, and is currently in pre-production for the SUNNY SIDE UP film adaptation. She is a triple Capricorn. \nBorn and raised in New Delhi\, India\, Shivani is a multi-disciplinary artist\, singer-songwriter\, author and composer whose work weaves together genres\, cultural identities\, and emotions. Her work aims to break tradition-based boundaries and is inspired by a blend of storytelling\, aesthetics\, and spirituality. Shivani has trained in Hindustani Classical music for twenty years and performs regularly in India and London. With her debut release\, Shivani has merged the Indian classical world with indie pop\, and has featured on NTS Radio and on BBC Introducing Asian Network as their Artist of the Week. Shivani is also a poet with her debut poetry book To the Homes that We Are sold internationally and read at festivals and exhibitions and shared in universities in the UK. Today\, she is accompanied by Vishnu Vijayan on the tabla and Theo Archer on the bass. Following their recent performance at the Indian High Commission and at the SOAS concert series\, Shivani Vishnu and Theo are bringing a contemporary rendition of Indian classical music\, with storytelling and poetry enhancing the creative practice. \nNatsuko is a Japanese-Australian live performance director and digital scenographer currently pursuing a Masters in Design for Performance and Interaction at UCL. Natsuko‘s work draws on psychological and sociological research\, along with a deep interest in biomimetic architecture\, to create immersive experiences. Integrating emerging technologies with dance\, physical theatre\, sound\, lighting design\, and architecture\, they craft multi sensory environments that push the boundaries of live performance. Natsuko is fundamentally interested in the complexity of human beings and why we behave the way we do as we all navigate the world in fascinatingly distinct ways. \nAlex Bertulis-Fernandes is a stand-up and writer. Alex won the British Comedy Guide Pro Award for Performance. Alex was a Channel 4 Sean Lock Comedy Award Finalist\, Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Finalist\, and BBC New Comedy Awards Nominee. Her jokes have featured in The Guardian and The Telegraph. Alex wrote material for ITV’s Piglets\, BBC Radio 4’s Dead Ringers\, The Now Show and The News Quiz\, and for several upcoming films. Alex went viral for her response to being told to “dial down the feminism.” She’s working with Clapperboard Studios on a sitcom set in a psychiatric ward.  \nBy day\, Torera is a lawyer—but when the sun sets\, she transforms into a dynamic dancer\, poet\, and writer. Torera believes in the healing power of artistic expression and is on a mission to make creativity accessible to everyone – from seasoned artists to buttoned-up lawyers in corporate offices. Because art belongs to us all.  With a passion for storytelling through movement and words\, Torera has choreographed and produced a short dance film\, performed on world-renowned stages like the Bloomsbury Theatre\, and is now curating her own Artists’ Showcase on March 15th. Her work blends movement\, poetry\, and sound to create an immersive experience that pulls you deep into her world. In her upcoming performance\, she will explore how romantic relationships serve as mirrors\, forcing us to confront the hardest truths about ourselves.

Most of the programming will be from local artists and organisations\, with touring and visiting contributions making it a truly national event. This edition’s programme will embed a particular focus on exploring mental health and wellbeing through the lens of the arts and its impact on individuals and communities affected by experiences of displacement. \nThis event in partnership with DanceEast on 25th November will be a chance to learn more about Platforma\, including how artists and organisations can get involved and what support can be provided. It will also be an opportunity to network across the arts\, refugee and other sectors in and around Ipswich. We will also share more about our work around mental health and creative well-being. \nIt will be an informal and friendly day\, and anyone with an interest in this work is welcome. It is fine to come for only part of the day. \nPlease contact tom@counterpoints.org.uk to reserve a free place or with any questions. We are able to cover the costs of local travel for people who are not supported by an organisation. \nMany thanks to the DanceEast for generously hosting this event. \nOther similar events have been (or will be) taking place in other places across the region. \nBACKGROUND\nIn 2023 the 7th Platforma festival was held over 5 weeks across the South West of England\, with more than 30 events. A key part of the programme is connecting organisations and people across the arts\, migration and other sectors. We also seek to make connections between places\, within the region and with visiting artists and practitioners from across the UK and internationally. \nBy focusing on a different region every two years\, Counterpoints is able to spend time getting to know a wide range of new partners and to build and understanding of the context. Our co-commissions and overall programme are responsive to that\, with a view to capacity building for the longer term and creating collaborations that last well beyond the festival period. \nPlatforma also becomes a focus of local media\, as with this 2023 report by the BBC. \nRead more about Platforma 2023

SUMMARY:CORE by Abigail Reynolds (Cornwall)
DESCRIPTION:As part of Flamm by Creative Kernow (21-22nd October 2023)\nOur relationship with the Earth is changing. \nWe must attune ourselves to the Earth and each other by listening\, responding\, and moving together. Core explores these themes in a quarry\, a scar of past extraction. Once a test site for dynamite drills\, Holman quarry has been silent for decades. Core invites us to dance to new rhythms and sounds in this carved landscape. The lost rhythms of percussive drills are replaced by electronic beats made entirely from quarry recordings. These unique sounds\, mixed by acclaimed producers during workshops\, let us reconnect to the rhythms of the Earth. \nDate: Saturday 21st October 2023 \nTime:\nFirst performance 6.30PM-8.30pm\nSecond performance 8.30PM-10.30PM \nLocation: Holman Quarry\, Lanner\, Redruth TR16 5HG. The event will be accessible via minibuses. \nBooking is essential but free to attend\, cash donations are welcome. More info on how to book to come. Keep an eye out on Flamm website and socials. Facebook\, Instagram and Twitter. \nAbout Abigail Reynolds\nAbigail uses montage techniques of layering and folding to destabilise singular ideas of cultural and political ecologies. She often works in dialogue with disciplines and places outside the art world; a silver band\, geologists\, libraries. She works across sculpture\, print and film as well as creating ephemeral events to bring disparate things into conversation. She works with a strong awareness of plurality; keeping a space complex and unreconciled.\n\n“The pages and images she excavates\, now dislocated from their original context\, become more like artifacts or archaeological remnants – more enigmatic\, more mutable\, and open to more complex meaning and association.” (Martin Clark)\n\nAbigail is noted for her work in collage\, using dynamic forms of assembly to release the latent possibilities in book plates by cutting and folding. To fold or layer historic images or events brings into focus our relation to time\, making it possible to discern things that are almost completely lost. Another medium she often uses is glass – using it  metaphorically to focus the act of looking and to suggest alternative modes of perception as well as simply to focus the light. \nCORE is being presented as part of a multi-layered programme of exhibitions and events. Supported by Art Night\, Counterpoints Arts\, Creative Kernow\, Cultivator\, Good Growth\, Levelling Up\, Shared Prosperity Fund and Cornwall Council. Part of the Platforma festival 2023\, produced by Counterpoints Arts and partners across the South West of England.

SUMMARY:Gwyrdh Glas by Sovay Berriman (Cornwall)
DESCRIPTION:As part of Flamm by Creative Kernow (21-22nd October 2023)\nGwyrdh Glas (tr. Green Green)\, sits within Berriman’s ongoing project MESKLA | Brewyon Drudh (tr. Mussel Gathering | Precious Fragments) 2022-24\, a multi-platform artwork that uses sculpture and conversation to explore contemporary Kernewek (Cornish) cultural identity and its relationship with heritage\, land\, and extraction industries\, including tourism and mining. \nMESKLA offers space for play in making and for conversation around questions of cultural heritage and belonging. \nDates/Times: \n\nSaturday 21st October 2023\, 11AM-11PM\nSunday 22nd October 2023\, 11AM-6PM\n\nLocation: Market Hall\, Market Way\, Redruth\, TR15 2AU \nNo booking required. \nAbout Sovay Berriman\nSovay Berriman’s work is rooted in their experience of being Cornish\, their culture’s shifting identity\, and the mutability yet power of a sense of place. \nPerformance platforms and dance floors\, the politics of responsibility\, identity and waste\, as well as a fascination with the natural environment’s evolution and its domestic and industrial use\, inform the abstract and semi-fantastical sculptural structures and events Sovay builds. \nThe artworks Sovay creates manifest out of multiple elements. Printed or drawn symbols and forms repeat and layer; components of found material\, acrylic or clay man lean\, prop or balance; live or recorded conversations may be presented upon stages of timber and reclaimed copper\, or made accessible through online platforms. All of these fragments work together through drawing\, text/audio\, moving image\, sculpture & installation to create a whole of shared stories and supportive structures. \nSovay uses visual art as a framework and prompt for action and discussion\, and is committed to questioning balances of power. Sovay is excited by the possibility of the collective\, supple and subtle boundaries\, edges and moments of change. Sovay invites contributors into the work at significant times to collaborate\, test and participate. \nSovay has exhibited & worked with organisations & galleries\, such as MIRROR – Plymouth\, Contemporary Art Society\, Spike Island – Bristol\, Exeter Phoenix\, The Harris – Preston\, Pi-ArtWorks – London/Istanbul\, & Robin Gibson – Sydney. \nGwyrdh Glas is being presented as part of Flam\, a multi-layered programme of exhibitions and events. SUMMARY:The Creative Sanctuary Symposium (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The Creative Sanctuary symposium produced by Insiders / Outsiders Festival takes place online 20-21 October telling the story of Dartington Hall in Devon as an important place of sanctuary for refugees from Fascist Europe. Get your tickets on Eventbrite\, £0-35\, concessions available. \nDartington Hall\, established by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst in the late 1920s as a utopian agricultural and educational experiment\, became a much-needed place of refuge for a significant number of eminent creative individuals\, who because of their Jewish background and/or anti-fascist stance\, were forced to leave Germany (and later\, Austria) after 1933. Spanish Republicans fleeing the Spanish Civil War were also welcomed. \nComprising a lively mixture of illustrated talks straddling multiple art forms (fine and applied arts\, architecture\, dance and music)\, discussions\, Q&A sessions and film screenings\, the programme will be aimed at both a general and a specialist audience\, local\, national and international. \nThe symposium\, which draws on the very latest archival researches by established and early career scholars alike\, will fill a significant gap in twentieth century British cultural and social history. \nFor full details of the programme\, including a breakdown of events and guest speakers\, see the Eventbrite page. \nThe symposium is kindly supported by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art\, Shoresh Charitable Trust\, the Elmgrant Trust and Counterpoints Arts. \nMain image: Hans Keller teaching at Summer School of Music\, Dartington Hall \nPart of the Platforma festival 2023\, produced by Counterpoints Arts and partners across the South West of England.

SUMMARY:The South West SIM Project workshops at Martin Parr Foundation and The Royal Photographic Society (Bristol)
DESCRIPTION:The SIM Project workshops give tangible meaning to people’s virtual networks and explore how the images we create and exchange through our smartphones map our place in the world. \nPeople who have experience of displacement and those working to support refugees and asylum seekers in the South West of England will be invited to workshops at Martin Parr Foundation and Royal Photographic Society in Bristol. In a process that combines analogue and digital photography with jewellery making and origami\, participants will create unique SIM-scale artefacts to keep\, wear and to be added to the project collection. \nThe personal artefacts made as part of Platforma will be exhibited in Houston\, Texas in 2024. They will be shown alongside SIM artefacts made by over 170 participants from countries including Afghanistan\, Syria\, Turkey\, Venezuela\, Hong Kong\, Senegal and Libya at previous workshops held in 7 countries across Europe. \nThe project is led by artist and anthropologist Liz Hingley\, with the support of Jeweller Sofie Boons and Frank Menger of the Centre for Print Research at the University of West England. Initially inspired by collaboration with Syrians on a UK resettlement programme in 2017\, the project was recently supported by Liz’s residency within the Department of Digital Humanities at Kings College London (2020-23) and is sponsored by 4JET: innovations in glass\, Just Castings and Beyond Print. \nMartin Parr Foundation will generously host the workshops and an accompanying pubic symposium on the 18th October bringing together artists whose works relates to themes of migration\, displacement and belonging. \nPart of the Platforma festival 2023\, produced by Counterpoints Arts and partners across the South West of England.

SUMMARY:Core: Electronic Music Workshops (Cornwall)
DESCRIPTION:Core: Electronic Music Workshops\nAS PART OF FLAMM BY CREATIVE KERNOW\nMake dance music for the mix at Abigail Reynolds’ Core in a quarry on the edge of Redruth. \nCore is an invitation to dance to the rhythms and sounds of a quarry which has been drilled with hundreds of deep holes. The quarry was a test site for the drills used to set dynamite deep inside the stone\, but has been silent for decades. The lost rhythm of the percussive drills will be replaced by loud electronic beats created entirely from recordings made in the quarry. For Core\, sounds from the quarry will mixed by an impressive list of music producers\, solo\, in collaboration\, and through workshops. \nThe workshops are for all levels\, from curious young people and beginners who want to learn how to mix a dance track\, through to experienced music producers. SUMMARY:V&A Family Trail: Refugee stories
DESCRIPTION:Go on a journey around the museum and explore six objects that tell a story about people who became refugees. This trail is aimed at families with children. \n\nThe United Nations Refugee Agency states that refugees are people who have fled war\, violence\, conflict or persecution and have crossed an international border to find safety in another country. Refugees often have had to flee with little more than the clothes on their back\, leaving behind homes\, possessions\, jobs and loved ones. Walk this trail with your family or friends to celebrate the contribution of refugees to the United Kingdom and encourage better understanding between communities. \n\nThis event is free and part of V&A’s Refugee Week programme of events celebrating community and mutual care. Found out more about the history of the objects included in the trail at the V&A website. \nImage: Dish\, by unknown maker\, about 1880\, Mumbai\, India. Museum no. SUMMARY:Syrian Arts and Culture Festival
DESCRIPTION:SACF is a multidisciplinary arts festival showcasing Syria’s vibrant arts and culture. The curated multi-disciplinary programme of events offers a creative collision of film\, music\, performance\, visual arts and talks. The festival brings together established alongside emerging artists\, filmmakers\, performers\, and musicians to offer London audiences alternative narratives and perspectives on Syria\, its people\, and culture. \nThe festival’s name\, SACF\, is an acronym for Syrian Arts and Culture Festival. It also is a transliteration of the Arabic word ‘سقف’\, meaning ‘roof’ or ‘ceiling’\, a word which is also colloquially used to represent the very ‘limit’ of something. By drawing on these imaginaries\, SACF sets out to embody multiple meanings. On one hand\, the festival aims to bring people together under a shared roof\, where new connections and understandings can take shape. On the other hand\, it acts as a provocation against the limits imposed on forms of creative expression that many Syrians have cunningly navigated. SACF aspires to be a creative platform where limits can be pushed and boundaries are broken. \nThis year’s inaugural festival offers a platform to showcase a rich and exciting body of artistic output and creative expression that sheds light on Syria’s historical\, economic\, social\, political and cultural specificities. It presents a multitude of entry points through which to approach and reflect on present-day Syria\, pitting the richness and diversity of Syria\, along with its local intricacies\, against the uniformity portrayed by the global media and its images. Such an assemblage of works then necessarily points towards the plurality of the people and modes of existence that have constituted the formation of Syria since its independence in 1946. \nThe festival emerges as a site of counterrepresentation\, where a broad range of narratives\, topics and issues can begin to make their way to the surface\, allowed to be made visible once again. This importantly\, presents a portal\, wherein connections between past realities and present-day urgencies can be redrawn\, offering a lens through which the revolutionary aspirations of 2011 and the violent and destructive suppression that has since engulfed the country can be re-witnessed not as an isolated set of events\, but rather encountered as a series of situated historical processes. This then opens up a space to creatively and critically reflect on a number of pertinent questions: How can we begin to renegotiate the present through the lens of the past? What reparative possibilities can be realised through such encounters? And lastly\, what new trajectories towards the future can be generated as a result? \nSAFC 2022 is supported by Arts Council England\, Shubbak\, Ettijahat and Counterpoints Arts
