SUMMARY:Kamilya Jubran and Werner Hasler
DESCRIPTION:Kamilya Jubran and Werner Hasler unravel a musical universe of possibilities; “a unison of timbres\, cultures complementing\, the complicity of verses\, and modes and languages confronting each other” in the duo’s own way of communicating respective origins and contemporaneity. Lyrical\, within a sound full of contrast and ornamentation\, they pursue an expansion of their repertoire with imaginative interpretation and improvisation. \nHinging on a practice of interrogating their hearing and their expression\, their research and their desire\, Kamilya Jubran and Werner Hasler draw a universe where everything seems possible. It is a unison of stamps\, cultures completing each other\, sentences colliding with each other\, modes and languages meeting each other. It’s a way of communicating their respective roots and presents. Kamilya Jubran and Werner Hasler let us gradually see the tenants and secrets of their artistic conversation. The alchemy of their exchange unveils a voyage into a unique\, unheard sound. \nAs part of Kamilya Jubran’s Beyond 1932 Residency at King’s College London\, the duo will perform و WA (Arabic for ‘and’)\, their third album (2019 Everest Records er_093 ). \nThe performance will be followed by a short Q&A with the artists. \nFull details and booking \nCounterpoints has been working with the Beyond 1932 project\, sharing events with our networks.

SUMMARY:Think Tank: Music and Displacement
DESCRIPTION:Produced by Britten Pears Arts in partnership with Counterpoints Arts as part of the Platforma Festival (October 2025). \nThis strategic ThinkTank is being convened to explore and address the intersections between music\, migration\, and displacement. This initiative brings together artists\, cultural leaders\, policy makers\, academics\, funders\, and grassroots organisations to collectively envision more inclusive\, sustainable\, and impactful ways to create opportunities for refugee and migrant musicians and foster meaningful musical participation among displaced communities. \nMigration is as old as humanity and as it continues to shape our society\, music emerges not only as a form of cultural expression and emotional survival but also as a tool for community-building\, advocacy\, and socio-economic inclusion. This ThinkTank aims to generate actionable insights\, identify structural barriers\, and propose frameworks for ethical\, long-term support\, career development\, and community engagement. \nThis is an invitation only curated Think Tank\, with learnings and outcomes to be shared as appropriate in due course.

SUMMARY:The Music of Asia Minor: Violin Legends Semsis & Ogdontakis
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Refugee Week London\, in the 2025 iteration of Rebetiko Carnival Festival\, violonist Kyriakos Gouventas and a group of brilliant musicians present the work of master violinists Dimitris Semsis (Salonikios) and Ioannis Dragatsis (Ogdontakis). Reviving the precious music of Santourovioli\, the combination of violin\, santur and guitar\, this evening will introduce you to the early rebetiko music of Asia Minor.  \nDuring the great population movement in the southern Balkans in the early 20th century\, seminal artists from Constantinople\, Smyrna and the coasts of Asia Minor settled on the Greek islands and ports. Among them\, great music masters such as Dimitris Semsis (Salonikios) and Ioannis Dragatsis (Ogdontakis) came to Greece\, bringing along their sound and becoming leading figures in the local music scene.   \nTheir captivating performances and recordings made them legendary figures in the history of world music. The main instruments in Early Rebetika are violin\, santur\, guitar\, kanun\, oud and tampoura. Santurovioli is a minimal combination of violin\, santur and guitar. These three form an impressively functional musical system where the microtonal use of the violin shines brightly in the rich harmonics of the santur over a solid bass-guitar rhythmical background. Today\, there are only a few grand masters in the genre and Kyriakos Gouventas is considered the leading figure worldwide. \n \n  \nTickets\n£16/12 concession or £20 at the door\nBooking via Ticket Tailor or 020 7487 5060 \n \n  \nCo–organised with The Hellenic Centre and Rebetiko Carnival Festival 2025.\nPart of London Refugee Week Festival 2025. \nCounterpoints Arts is proud to continue its collaboration with The Hellenic Centre and be part of the Rebetiko Carnival\, a community organisation dedicated to widening access to music and supporting people in need. \n  \nAdditional information \n\nKyriakos Gouventas\nKyriakos Gouventas records hundreds of performances from China to America\, Africa and Australia\, as well as collaborations with world famous artists from all over the world. Gouventas\, the “Genius of the violin” has been teaching modes and maqams to international top-class musicians creating a musical scene of his own and a great following worldwide.  \nHaving studied violin at the State Conservatory he then worked with the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki and in various chamber music ensembles. SUMMARY:So Many Ways To Move
DESCRIPTION:A powerful performance by poetry and electronic music duo chamæleon\, who explore the relationship between art and activism based on their digital platform An Artist’s Manual Against Apartheid. Co-commissioned and supported by Counterpoints\, this event takes place during Shubbak Festival 2025. \nWeaving together sound\, text and imagery\, this multi-media performance offers a journey inward—toward both the self and the collective—framed by the urgent realities of today. The performance reflects on resistance in its many forms\, confronting complicity in a call to recognise and harness our collective strength against oppressive systems. \nchamæleon is a poetry and electronic music duo formed by Palestinian poet Farah Chamma and Brazilian music producer LIEV\, exploring the intersections between spoken word and musical textures. chamæleon dives into the unknown\, the search for belonging\, and the discovery of one’s identity. \nThrough this performance\, Farah & Liev navigate the intersections of the personal and the political. In it they re-assert the power of art—not only to reflect the times but to move with them. They see art as a force of transformation\, a channel for resistance and renewal. \nTickets: \nPrice: £7 (£8.41 with service fee) \nBOOK HERE \nRunning time: 3 hours

Kensaye’s approach to collaboration is of support and synergy. He helps independent artists beyond just ‘making a beat’\, but provide solutions to problems they encounter throughout their music journeys. \nKnown for her blend of percussive grooves and dark rhythms\, Mahnoor is a DJ\, BBC radio presenter & founder of refugee supper club SUP? Supper Club. Drawing from her British Pakistani heritage\, from global diasporic sounds and grime beats that she grew up with in London\, to the rave sounds she explored in her late teens living in France\, her eclectic style is characterised by the murkier ends of the UK bass spectrum with South Asian influences that move the dancefloor and bring it together\, like she did at Dour\, and at Le Fil\, Saint\nEtienne.\nShe is also fast becoming a respected curator as part of her Mahnoor Presents shows\, showcasing the best of global British Underground at iconic London venues like Cafe Koko and Ministry of Sound.\nThrough this blend Mahnoor keeps crowds engaged and on their toes\, delivering sets for Wavey Garms and New Balance & Nike too as well as being a regular guest presenter and selector on Rinse and playing across key London venues including Colour Factory\, Phonox & more.\nMahnoor returns to the French music scene delivering one of the most energetic sets at Dour Festival as part of the Daytimers takeover.\nAlongside her BBC Asian Network residency\, appearances also included Paris’ Mahalla\, Rinse FM UK & Rinse France covers\, NTS special and guest mixes across BBC Asian Network\, Worldwide FM\, Reprezent & more. \nNour’s never-ending quest for sounds that resonate with how she expresses herself as an artist is found in between differing genres. As a native Palestinian\, her taste in music is fueled by both inner and outer influences of her culture and her own perceptions of her heritage. NOUR emerged onto the musical playing fields in another exotic land hat was Tulum\, Mexico where she earned the title as a resident DJ at Papaya Playa Project\, the offspring of the veterans of Bar 25\, now Kater Holzig. In this paradise\, NOUR played her unique sounds for 3 seasons\, from 2012 until 2015. \nHer talented mixing reached the ears of the international crowds and in 2015 she ventured off to Scorpios\, a beach club on the island of Mykonos. There she also became a resident Dj for 4 seasons. In Mexico she’s played some of the top festivals in Central America like Akamba\, Tropico\, and Bravo. A true nomadic force of music\, NOUR has played at events like Gardens of Babylon Amsterdam\, Woomoon Ibiza\, Storytellers Ibiza\, Dystopia\, and Acid Sundays. She is also a regular at KaterBlau in Berlin. \nIn 2017\, NOUR’s career blossomed as she ventured on a sonic journey into the field of production\, music anthropology\, sound therapy and crisscross creativity. A collaborative union with Lamat Uuc resulted in her her first EP imprinted on Talavera Records containing a number of original tracks and remixes. This summer she released an EP on the prominent well-known record label Sol Selectas. \nNOUR’S trademark sound- strategically woven with elements of her Oriental roots and cut with edgier beats\, is a refreshing experience to ears on the dancefloor searching to hear something truly unique.

SUMMARY:CORE by Abigail Reynolds (Cornwall)
DESCRIPTION:As part of Flamm by Creative Kernow (21-22nd October 2023)\nOur relationship with the Earth is changing. \nWe must attune ourselves to the Earth and each other by listening\, responding\, and moving together. Core explores these themes in a quarry\, a scar of past extraction. Once a test site for dynamite drills\, Holman quarry has been silent for decades. Core invites us to dance to new rhythms and sounds in this carved landscape. The lost rhythms of percussive drills are replaced by electronic beats made entirely from quarry recordings. These unique sounds\, mixed by acclaimed producers during workshops\, let us reconnect to the rhythms of the Earth. \nDate: Saturday 21st October 2023 \nTime:\nFirst performance 6.30PM-8.30pm\nSecond performance 8.30PM-10.30PM \nLocation: Holman Quarry\, Lanner\, Redruth TR16 5HG. The event will be accessible via minibuses. \nBooking is essential but free to attend\, cash donations are welcome. More info on how to book to come. Keep an eye out on Flamm website and socials. Facebook\, Instagram and Twitter. \nAbout Abigail Reynolds\nAbigail uses montage techniques of layering and folding to destabilise singular ideas of cultural and political ecologies. She often works in dialogue with disciplines and places outside the art world; a silver band\, geologists\, libraries. She works across sculpture\, print and film as well as creating ephemeral events to bring disparate things into conversation. She works with a strong awareness of plurality; keeping a space complex and unreconciled.\n\n“The pages and images she excavates\, now dislocated from their original context\, become more like artifacts or archaeological remnants – more enigmatic\, more mutable\, and open to more complex meaning and association.” (Martin Clark)\n\nAbigail is noted for her work in collage\, using dynamic forms of assembly to release the latent possibilities in book plates by cutting and folding. To fold or layer historic images or events brings into focus our relation to time\, making it possible to discern things that are almost completely lost. Another medium she often uses is glass – using it  metaphorically to focus the act of looking and to suggest alternative modes of perception as well as simply to focus the light. \nCORE is being presented as part of a multi-layered programme of exhibitions and events. Supported by Art Night\, Counterpoints Arts\, Creative Kernow\, Cultivator\, Good Growth\, Levelling Up\, Shared Prosperity Fund and Cornwall Council. Mussel Gathering | Precious Fragments) 2022-24\, a multi-platform artwork that uses sculpture and conversation to explore contemporary Kernewek (Cornish) cultural identity and its relationship with heritage\, land\, and extraction industries\, including tourism and mining. \nMESKLA offers space for play in making and for conversation around questions of cultural heritage and belonging. \nDates/Times: \n\nSaturday 21st October 2023\, 11AM-11PM\nSunday 22nd October 2023\, 11AM-6PM\n\nLocation: Market Hall\, Market Way\, Redruth\, TR15 2AU \nNo booking required. \nAbout Sovay Berriman\nSovay Berriman’s work is rooted in their experience of being Cornish\, their culture’s shifting identity\, and the mutability yet power of a sense of place. \nPerformance platforms and dance floors\, the politics of responsibility\, identity and waste\, as well as a fascination with the natural environment’s evolution and its domestic and industrial use\, inform the abstract and semi-fantastical sculptural structures and events Sovay builds. \nThe artworks Sovay creates manifest out of multiple elements. Printed or drawn symbols and forms repeat and layer; components of found material\, acrylic or clay man lean\, prop or balance; live or recorded conversations may be presented upon stages of timber and reclaimed copper\, or made accessible through online platforms. All of these fragments work together through drawing\, text/audio\, moving image\, sculpture & installation to create a whole of shared stories and supportive structures. \nSovay uses visual art as a framework and prompt for action and discussion\, and is committed to questioning balances of power. Sovay is excited by the possibility of the collective\, supple and subtle boundaries\, edges and moments of change. Sovay invites contributors into the work at significant times to collaborate\, test and participate. \nSovay has exhibited & worked with organisations & galleries\, such as MIRROR – Plymouth\, Contemporary Art Society\, Spike Island – Bristol\, Exeter Phoenix\, The Harris – Preston\, Pi-ArtWorks – London/Istanbul\, & Robin Gibson – Sydney. \nGwyrdh Glas is being presented as part of Flam\, a multi-layered programme of exhibitions and events. SUMMARY:Come We Grow (Bristol)
DESCRIPTION:Come We Grow\nA sharing event celebrating the end of the Hip Hop Gardens programme by May Project Gardens. \nUsing Hip Hop and permaculture values Hip Hop Gardens supports and empowers a group of young people with refugee backgrounds\, residing in Bristol. \nOver a series of workshops in September the programme will focus on five key modules: Wellbeing\, Food Growing & Cooking\, Enterprise and Employability\, Event Management and lastly Hip Hop\, Social Movement and Green Structures. This programme methodology incorporates environmentalism & Hip Hop through song writing\, music production and performances.  \nAbout the Co-Founders of May Project Gardens\nMohammed Yahya (MoYah) is MPGs HHGN ambassador and co-facilitated Bristol´s first HHGN programme in 2022/23 alongside Ian. His unwavering passion for environmental conservation and preservation is just one aspect of his advocacy work.
