SUMMARY:Floating Together: Refugee Week Co-Commission by Malak Mattar
DESCRIPTION:A new public artwork commissioned by Choose Love\, Counterpoints and the Southbank Centre.\nResponding to the Refugee Week 2026 theme of ‘courage’\, and the Choose Love and Creative Visions themes ‘unique and united’ artist Malak Mattar has created a new installation in collaboration with young people from Ukraine and Greece. The commission is a bold public artwork inviting reflection on solidarity\, community and courage. \nMalak Mattar describes Floating Together\n‘Growing up by the sea in Gaza\, summer meant long days at the beach and the excitement of new colourful swimming floats that marked our journey from childhood to adulthood. Swan and turtle-shaped floats became symbols of joy and childhood. Over time\, the meaning of the sea changed. As life under blockade became difficult\, many young people began crossing the sea in search of a better life. Some reached new shores\, while others were lost along the way. \n‘The installation reflects both memories of my childhood and the realities of displacement. Inspired by swimming floats\, the work is large\, playful and illuminated with vibrant light\, especially at night\, honouring the many refugee journeys made in darkness\, while sending a message that refugees are seen\, welcomed and cared for. \n‘The patterns featured on the floats are created in collaboration with young people from Ukraine and Greece\, alongside drawings by children from Gaza\, expressing family life\, flowers\, dreams\, love and unity.’ \nThe installation is part of the Southbank Centre’s Riverside Sessions. \n  \nAbout Malak Mattar\nMalak Mattar (b. Gaza Strip) is a multidisciplinary Palestinian artist whose work is rooted in personal and collective experiences under occupation and siege. She began painting as a teenager\, using art as a form of survival and resistance. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections\, including the British Museum. Mattar is also the Artistic Director of the Together for Palestine Concert and the author of the bestselling children’s book Sitti’s Bird. \nPhoto by Hossam Fazulla

SUMMARY:A Tonic to the Nation
DESCRIPTION:A Tonic to the Nation: Immigrant Contribution to the Festival of Britain\nA full day symposium\, an exhibition and a concert from Insiders/Outsiders in partnership with St John’s Waterloo. \nScheduled to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the Festival of Britain\, this one-day symposium will explore an important but still widely overlooked aspect of the Festival and its legacy: namely\, the disproportionately large creative input of those from (mostly) Jewish immigrant families and of former refugees from Nazism – many of them imprisoned behind barbed wire as so-called ‘enemy aliens’ only eleven years earlier. \nIn so doing\, it will invite a closer critical scrutiny both of the nature and extent of that input and of the complex issues of postwar cultural renewal\, national memory and identity\, patriotism and assimilation\, both then and in the present – and by extension highlight the creative contributions of more recent immigrants and their descendants to this contemporary British life. \nComprising a lively mixture of illustrated talks\, discussions\, a concert and the Royal College of Music exhibition ‘Music\, Migration and Mobility’ about émigré musicians from Nazi Europe in Britain\, the symposium programme is aimed at both a general and a specialist audience. \nThe project is initiated and organised by Monica Bohm-Duchen\, founding director of Insiders/Outsiders\, an ongoing celebration of the contribution made by refugees from Nazi Europe to British culture\, in partnership with St John’s Waterloo. Restored after being bombed during WWII\, it became the official church for the Festival of Britain and home to two major paintings by German-Jewish émigré artist Hans Feibusch. The symposium and concert form part of “Now I make a leaf of voices“\, a series of events celebrating St John’s Festival of Britain heritage\, which runs between July and December 2026. \nFull details and booking
