PopChange Film Club is our new monthly meet-up at RichMix to watch films, talk about them and talk to each other.

The first edition featured two documentary films.

  • No Crying at The Dinner Table, directed by Carol Nguyen who interviews her own family to craft an emotionally complex and meticulously composed portrait of intergenerational trauma, grief, and secrets in this cathartic documentary about things left unsaid
  • The Things We Don’t Say, directed by Ornella Mutoni: 30 years after the genocide that tore apart their mothers’ worlds, a group of young Rwandans confront the family secrets and the wounds their generation is carrying. They are led by Emilienne, a therapist and genocide survivor, to try to break cycles of intergenerational trauma together.

And for the second edition we presented a selection of shorts by filmmakers from the Other Cinemas Film School – a free, year-long film school which provides new and emerging filmmakers from diverse backgrounds with mentorship and guidance to create confident, imaginative, and curious filmmakers who are interested in the transformative potential of filmmaking.

Our third (24 Feb) is Black Godfather of Scuba (pictured), directed by Matt Kay, which follows the extraordinary life and mission of Dr. Albert Jose “Doc” Jones, co-founder of the National Association of Black Scuba Divers. After diving at the wreck of the Henrietta Marie, the first lost slave ship ever to be recovered, he dedicated himself to finding and recovering the remains of others, and to making sure those lost souls would never be forgotten.

At a time when film distribution is getting narrower we want PopChange Film Club to showcase the range of work by filmmakers from refugee and migrant backgrounds, and the power film has to share stories and perspectives. Sign up for our newsletter and follow us on social media for details of upcoming screenings and we hope to see you there!
