Many people and organisations are feeling uncertain, even fearful, about hosting events on migration in the current climate of anti‑migrant rhetoric and recent riots. But these events and conversations matter so much, and they must continue. We created the Protocol of Care to help ourselves and others feel equipped rather than intimidated, to put practical measures in place so artists, participants, staff and audiences feel as supported as possible. We hope to help ensure that challenging topics can always be explored with dignity, care and confidence.
The Protocol of Care is a gentle, practical guide for anyone hosting events or conversations about migration, displacement and/or mental health. It recognises that no space can ever truly be “safe,” but that we can design spaces that feel intentional and kind. The Protocol of Care offers simple steps to help hold difficult conversations with sensitivity, cultural awareness and honesty, without shying away from the complexity these themes can carry.
Our hope is that you use the Protocol of Care, share it, adapt it and make it your own.
