Soumik Datta Arts (SDA) is looking to recruit a diverse team of seven migrant and refugee artists to form the first cohort of their Green Room project, which will take place between December 2023 and March 2024. In this programme artists will have the opportunity to collaborate with each other to develop their creative practices and create new work. This is a paid opportunity.
They want to work with key partners to identify artists from a range of countries, including but not restricted to Iran, Kenya, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, Palestine, Yemen. Their aim is to recruit at least 50% of artists from refugee backgrounds and they would love to support at least one artist who has been through the asylum process.
Soumik Datta Arts is a charity that bridges Indian music with contemporary artforms to create productions responding to themes including climate justice, mental health and migration. Led by British Indian musician and virtuoso sarod player Soumik Datta, they’ve worked with BBC4, British Council, Southbank, BBC Radio 3, Earth Day Network, Choose Love and Royal Albert Hall, reaching 5 million people via productions, films and albums.
Each year for their Green Room programme they will work with a team of seven artists who are migrants to the UK or are from refugee backgrounds. This team will meet and co-create the work during three residential weeks at our base at ‘Hawkwood Centre for Future Thinking’ in Gloucestershire, co-composing, recording, rehearsing and cultivating a culture of peer support to produce new music and work for the stage. Whilst predominantly a music programme, not all the cohort need to be musicians, as there’ll be space for film-makers, sound artists and engineers to contribute to the creative process. The work will be overseen by SDA associates from Aga Khan Foundation, many of whom are outstanding Master Musicians. Feedback from guests will assure the cohort have the highest quality of artistic steering to drive their potential.
Deadline for applications as been updated to 1st September 2023
